Ernest Monroe Simpson, age 84, died early Thursday morning, November 13, 2008, at Integris Grove General Hospital in Grove, Oklahoma. Ernest was born on March 9, 1924, in Alfalfa, Oklahoma, to Charles Ruben and Bertha Jane (Ticer) Simpson. Ernest served as a civilian in the Airborne Coordinating Group. . Ernest, grew up working on his parents' farm in Alfalfa, after attending some college he went to California where he worked. He returned to Oklahoma Ernest and married Irene Francis Sharry on September 12, 1945. He and his wife moved back to California where he worked at the Alameda Naval Station. Here two of his children were born. The couple returned to Oklahoma and soon Ernest had his own business Simpson TV & Appliance in Ft. Cobb. He spent two years in Utah working at Hill Air Force Base then returned to Oklahoma again to teach electronics at the Vo-tech school in Ft. Cobb. He left there to open a new store, Simpson TV & Appliance in Norman. His final job before retirement was as the first Director of Handicap Concerns for the State of Oklahoma. Ernest was very active both physically and politically, he routinely walked eight miles with his white cane until he broke his hip. Upon recovery he was forced to walk only six miles and had to add an extra cane. He enjoyed listening to the news and sports. Ernest was very active with the local group for the visually impaired, and worked in at the Help Center. Ernest was the "King" of the 2007 Pelican Festival of Grove and a long time member of First United Methodist Church of Grove. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene Simpson, and four siblings Charles Simpson, John Simpson, Kay Payne and Norma Hamilton. He is survived by his best friend Vernice Eck, his three children - Galen P. Simpson and wife Lori Roberts of Roy, Utah, Dee Lawson and husband Tim McDaniel of Grove, Oklahoma, and Marcia Shoemaker of Tulsa, Oklahoma, eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Hamill officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Alfalfa Cemetery in Alfalfa, Oklahoma. Memorial donations can be made to the Grove Christian Help Center.
