Rogers, AR (formerly of Grove, OK) - Opal Lea Melton, age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior early Thursday morning, March 20, 2008, at the New Mercy Medical Center in Rogers, Arkansas. Opal was born in rural Welch, Oklahoma are on July 11, 1919 to Clyde and Jessie Belle (Ledbetter) Lucas. That is where she was raised, met her husband, of 61 years, Henry Leroy Melton. They were married on February 5, 1941 in Welch, Oklahoma. Hank preceded Opal in death in November of 2002. Opal was a Registered Nurse, working for various doctors, hospitals and private duties for 41 years, retiring in 1980. She loved all flowers, enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball and basketball, sewing, crafts, fishing, cooking and playing bingo; which she was quite lucky at winning. Opal enjoyed listening to music from the 30's, 40's and 50's; Lawrence Welk, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were her favorites. Wichita Kansas is where she worked and raised her family. Always had wonderful flowers and gardens, she kept a lovely home, loved her animals and the outdoors. Opal was extremely honest, trustworthy, strong and intelligent. She loved her husband dearly, cherished the jewelry that she had gotten from him. She also was very proud of the family quilts, the flags from both her husband and his father, and all of the family photos. Opal is survived by her two daughters, Shirley Diane Canard and her husband Curtis of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Shelia Jo Gephart and her husband Charles of Rogers, Arkansas, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Ellis Family Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Grove, with Pastor James Wilder officiating. Interment will be held at the Welch Cemetery in Welch, Oklahoma. Memorial donations can be made in Opal's name to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Rogers, Arkansas.
